What They Do – the front row players have key roles in “set” plays, or the plays that occur after a rules infraction stops the match. The two props and the hooker and known as the “front row” because of their role as the front row in the scrum (see photo). This is also where the hooker’s position gets its name: it is the hooker’s job in the scrum to “hook” the ball back to the other players on the hooker’s club once it is rolled into the scrum. The other two front row players are known as props or pillars because it is their job to prop up or hold up the hooker in the scrum.
